An ex-Samsung Electronics executive has responded to concerns over his move to a Chinese semiconductor company, stressing that there won’t be any technology transfer or leak.

Chang Won-ki, who was formerly the president and head of Samsung’s China operation, recently drew headlines in South Korean media when his move to Beijing Eswin Computing Technology became public. He reportedly joined Eswin as vice chairman back in February.

Eswin is led by Wang Dongsheng, who previously served as chairman of Chinese display giant BOE, a fierce rival to South Korean firms Samsung and LG.

In an interview with South Korean media Hankyung, Chang said he joined Eswin out of his friendship with Wang. The ex-Samsung president said he introduced BOE-made Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) panels to the South Korean tech giant when Wang was serving as chairman of BOE.

Chang said Wang first offered to collaborate back in 2015 but he had refused then. After the Chinese executive left BOE last year and asked him to collaborate again, Chang said he agreed out of loyalty as the two shared a deep friendship, according to the Hankyung report.

On concerns over technology leak, Chang said he was a dry etching engineer for semiconductors 30 years ago when Samsung made 1 megabyte DRAM, and had no current knowledge on technology to give away.

His last post close to technology was as head of LCD but that was also ten years ago, the ex-Samsung president stressed. He was 66 years old and had little up-to-date knowledge on displays as well.

Chang said he was a “Samsung Man” to the bone and said he told Wang that he won’t do anything that will require him to compete with his former company before joing Eswin.

The executive joined Samsung Electronics in 1981. He started his career there in the semiconductor business then later headed its LCD operations. He became head of Samsung China in 2011 and remained in that post until 2017 after in which he left the company.

Meanwhile, Eswin makes display driver IC, a key component in display panels.
