AMD has record its highest quarterly market share in x86 CPU in the second quarter since the fourth quarter of 2013.

The US chip giant controlled 18.3% of x86 CPU in the second quarter, according to Mercury Research on Thursday. The company has a share of 10.6% back in the third quarter of 2018.

AMD controlled 19.7% market share in desktop and notebook in the quarter. In the third quarter of 2018, the company had a share of 11.6%. It is its highest share in category in eight years, since the first quarter of 2012.

For notebooks alone, it had a share of 19.9%, over double that of its share of 8.8% in same quarter of 2018. Its previous record was the 19.4% marked on the fourth quarter of 2006.

Its octa-core mobile CPU Ryzen 7 4800U played the key role. At CES 2020, AMD said the chip had 90% faster multi thread capabilities compared to its counterpart in Intel. The chip-set powers Lenovo’s Yoga Slim 7 Notebook.

In desktop PCs, AMD has a share of 19.2% in the second quarter. It has been growing for eleven straight quarters since the fourth quarter of 2017 when it has 12% market share.

AMD is planning to unveil its 4th generation desktop CPU Zen 3 later this year.
