Electric vehicle (EV) maker Tesla announced its new battery on Battery Day event at California on Tuesday. The new battery is bigger and has increased energy density. The company plans to produce up to 100GWh per year in 2022, and 3TWh by 2030.

Such things as solid-state battery, a million mile battery and nano-wire battery that were expected weren’t announced at the event.

Instead, Tesla introduced its battery design, production processes and recycling plan to drop the prices of batteries quickly.

Here are the five important points from Tesla.

1. We will make our own batteries __ it’s official

Tesla has up to now haven’t announced it was planning to make its own batteries __ it has now said it loud and clear. It will be making 46800 batteries starting in 2022. This will have five times the energy density, six time the output and travel 16% more distance per charge compared to the 21700 batteries it is using for its EV at the current time.

2. It is all about price

CEO Elon Musk stressed the importance of keeping prices low for the battery multiple times at the event. Currently, the average battery pack is priced at US$135 per kWh. A price below US$100 will be needed to compete with conventional combustion engine cars.

Tesla says it will design its own production equipment to reduce the time spent in the formation process. The batteries will cost less than US$100 per kWh by 2023, and around US$60 by 2025.

3. New cathode and anode materials

Tesla introduced its high-nickel technology __ the anode material will use nickel, cobalt, manganese and aluminum. Some predicted lithium ferrophosphate (LFP) will be used but they were wrong. Tesla didn’t mention how much nickel will account of the total materials sued. The company did however say it will reduce the amount of cobalt used and recycle the needed water.

In the cathode material, silicon coating technology will be used instead of the pricier nano-wiring. It will be called Tesla Silicon, which only costs US$1.2 per kWh __ as compared to silicon oxide’s US$6.6, graphite-based silicon’s US$10.2 and nano-wire’s US$100.

4. Unibody structure

Tesla’s battery is module-less, much like CATL’s cell to pack (CTP) technology. This is done to pack more batteries inside the EV. A new alloy is applied so that where the space that the battery is supposed to be installed its produced at once. For combustion engine cars, this is equal to changing the frame to monocoque.

5. Budget model and full autonomous driving

Tesla expects to move 514,500 EV units this year. Earlier this year, it expected to move around 500,000 units this year. This is around 40% higher than its 2019 shipment of 367,500 units. Software for full autonomous driving will be unveiled too. CEO Elon Musk said the software will be reveal a month from now and said Tesla’s autonomous driving solution had an accident rate of 0.3%.
