Philoptics has supplied its laser equipment used to cut ultrathin glass for a South Korean client, the company said on Friday.
Laser its used to cut the ultrathin glass that are used as the cover window in foldable smartphones.
Samsung launched the Galaxy Z Flip and Galaxy Z Fold 2 foldable smartphones this year __ both used glasses thinner than 0.03mm.
Philoptics has been developing the equipment since last year using its own laser optical technology. Using laser for cutting was faster than the previously used wheels.
Use of lasers allows for smaller curvatures of the glass, a Philoptics spokesperson explained.
The equipment is showing near perfect yield rate at commercial production lines, it added.
Glass offers more transparency compared to polyimide cover used for the first Galaxy Fold. But it is considered more delicate than plastics and harder to produce.
