SK Hynix begun mass production of 18GB LPDDR5 mobile DRAM, the company said on Monday.
The chips will be supplied to Asus for ROG(Republic of Gamers) 5 gaming smartphone.
SK Hynix said the new chip can run at up to 6,400Mbps, which is 20% faster than its predecessors that supported to up to 5,500Mbps.
The DRAM will be able to process up to ten 5GB Full HD movies in a second, the company said.
The chip is aimed at high resolution gaming and videos. It will also be applicable for high performance camera apps and artificial intelligence, SK Hynix said.
The increase in data capacity from 16GB to 18GB will show significant improvement in data processing speed and video quality on smartphones, the company added.
According to market research firm Omdia, LPDDR5 DRAM currently accounts for around 10% of total mobile DRAMs, but this will expand to over 50% by 2023.
