Application of Samsung Display’s Proprietary Technology 'HIAA'

It is predicted that Samsung Electronics’ new Galaxy S10 (tentative name) to be released early next year will be built genuinely bezeless with Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) panel without any borders.

Two fine holes at the top of the screen will be facilitated for camera and sensor. This is different from Apple’s M-shaped notch design to deploy 3D sensor modules for cameras and Face ID on iPhone X series.

According to industry sources on 14 Nov, Samsung Electronics’ Wireless Enterprise division is working with Samsung Display to apply zero-bezel display placing front camera lens and infrared (IR) sensor through two different holes into the panels. Proximity and illuminance sensor, and LED status indicator will be moved below the display.

Samsung Display has named this technology ‘HIAA’ (Hole in Active Area). Between deposition and thin film encapsulation processes, a “penetration” process called laser etching or laser drilling will be performed using Diode Pumping High-Conditioner (DPSS) to achieve that. Samsung Display is planning to use laser etching equipment that combines SFA and Philoptics + Wonik IPS (Reference: More Diverse Procurement for Samsung Bezeless OLED Equipment).

Although some of the information has been previously exposed under a different name ‘piercing display’ through foreign media, this is the first time information with such details be disclosed.

If bezeless displays are to be used on Galaxy S10, User Interface (UI) will be altered accordingly. Areas without holes can be marked with carrier logos, antenna sensitivity, battery capacity, and clock whereas watching video on full-screen, it can be adjusted through placing a black background on top of the hole.

However, this technology is not developed to its full swing yet. It is difficult to fill up the entire areas except the holes with display pixels. As such, Samsung Electronics also has prepared a Plan B by digging out upper left or right corner of the screen in “L” shape, and apply the front camera and other sensors onto it.

Some Industry sources claimed that “Zero-bezel displays will be a solution that leads to more sales than foldable. It is difficult for Chinese suppliers to catch up”. He also added. “Apple is likely to stay out of zero-bezel display development on its next iPhone”.
