South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy on Wednesday said it has chosen ten categories of semiconductors used in cars to develop.

These are car storage, power management chips, driver video record system chips, and others.

Though microcontroller unit, which is experiencing the worst shortage that has affected car production worldwide, was not included in the ten, the ministry chose chips that can be commercialized quickly.

The ministry also hosted the meeting of the council of semiconductor and car companies on the same day.

It will choose member companies of the council to develop the chips. It will offer a total of 40 billion won for their development up to next year.

The ministry said in for infotainment processors and image sensors, where South Korean companies already have competence, it was planning a mid- to long-term plan.

The government will also develop next-generation power management chips, where there is high demand from car makers, it said.

It will start drawing up a road map near the end of April for a long-term plan to develop semiconductors used in automobiles.
