South Korean fabless firm Pixelplus will begin selling its facial recognition image sensor in China this year, TheElec has learned.
The company is attempting to diversify its revenue steram and reduce its reliance on biometric recognition solution for CCTVs and automobiles.
Facial recognition systems take images of people and compared it with those in its database to correctly identify them. It is used in gate security and other sectors.
The accuracy of the image sensor is crucial for such systems to work properly. It also requires the appropriate artificial intelligence algorithm to sort the images.
A Pixelplus spokesperson said it had supplied high-resolution image sensors for surround view monitors and endoscopes.
These HD and Full HD resolution image sensors can be used in facial recognition systems as well, they added.
Pixelplus had previously supplied its SoC PM1002 for fingerprint, face and iris detection to customers.
According to data from Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA), the global facial recognition market is expected to grow 20% a year up to 2022 to be worth US$9 billion. China will account for the majority of this market to be worth 50 billion yuan.
