Around 169 million units of iPhone OLED panels will be shipped this year, according to market research firm Omdia.

This is 47.6% higher than the 114.5 million units shipped in 2020.

The 169 million units includes legacy OLED iPhone models as well as those for new models launching later this year. Apple has applied OLED panels to all its new iPhones since last year.

Samsung Display will be supplying 110 million units, LG Display 50 million units and BOE 9 million units, according to Omdia’s estimates.

Last year, Samsung Display had supplied 89.6 million units and LG Display 25 million units. Their shipment to Apple this year is an increase of 22.8% and 100%, respectively, year-on-year.

Samsung Display’s market share in iPhone OLED panels was 78.3% in 2020 and this will drop to 65.1% if these estimates are met. LG Display’s will increase from 21.8% to 29.6% in the same time period. BOE will have a share of 5.3% this year.

Apple will become the largest procurer of smartphone OLED panels this year. OLED panels will be used in 78% of all iPhones this year, according to Omdia.

Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics is expected to use 157 million units of OLED panels in its smartphones this year, according to the research firm. This is only a slight increase from 152.3 million units of last year.

Xiaomi will be the third largest procurer of OLED panels with 67 million units.

A total of 584.5 million units of OLED panels are expected to be shipped this year, an increase of 28% from 2020. Flexible OLED panels will account for 335.5 million units, while rigid OLED panels will make up 249 million units. Apple only uses flexible OLED panels for its iPhones.

Last year, a total of 456.6 million units of smartphone OLED were shipped, a 3% decline from 2019’s 471 million units. Huawei used less OLED panels due to US sanctions, while Samsung’s use of the panels also dropped due to intense competition with Apple and Chinese companies.

Chinese panel companies also failed to meet their smartphone OLED shipment target. The combined target of BOE, CSOT, Everdisplay, Tianma, Visionox and Royole was 100 million units but actual shipment was short of 80 million units, according to Omdia.
