Chemical firm bought patents from Dupont in 2019 for the operation
LG Chem is aiming to expand its supply of blue OLED emission layer to LG Display this year, TheElec has learned.
LG Chem is hoping to supply the blue host for the WBE material set used by LG Display for their large-sized OLED panels.
An OLED material set is comprised of an emission layer __ which admits the light __ and layers to transmit the electrons. The emission layer is comprised of a host and a dopant that emit the light and a prime to increase luminance efficiency. LG Display’s latest OLED material set, WBE, was first applied to its OLED panel production line at Guangzhou, China.
LG Display is still using its older WBC material set at its E3 and E4 production liens at Paju, South Korea.
The WB stands for white bottom: LG Display’s OLED uses white OLED and a bottom emission structure. The E or C behind WB refers to the material’s characteristics. WBE offers longer life span and higher color gamut than WBC.
The WBE’s blue host has been called long-life blue emission layer by experts in South Korea.
LG Chem began supplying blue host for WBC to LG Display for use at Paju. LG Display uses blue host mainly from Idemitsu Kosan of Japan for its Paju plant. LG Chem paid patent licensing fees to Idemitsu last year to supply the blue host to LG Display last year.
LG Display, for its latest WBE material set, uses blue host from Dupont, Idemitsu Kosan and P&H Tech. P&H Tech produces Dupont’s blue host as an OEM.
LG Display is planning to apply WBE to its E3 and E4 lines at a later date. E3 will likely start using WBE within the year and E4 by the first half of 2022. This expanded application of WBE is the reason why LG Chem is pushing to supply more blue host to LG Display.
LG Chem had bought four US patents and 87 South Korean patents related to blue host from Dupont in 2019 to expand this operation.
Solus Advanced Materials, which also makes OLED materials, last month began supplying the key layer in the hole transporting layer of OLED to LG Display for use at the E3 line at Paju.
Meanwhile, LG Chem is currently also supplying the electron transporting layer, green host, yellow green host and red host to LG Display for use in WBC and WBE.
