Samsung is planning to use OLED panels from both Samsung Display and LG Display for its main OLED TV series S90D launching this year, TheElec has learned.
Out of its three most popular OLED TV series S95D, S90D, and S85D, S90D accounts for the most volume.
Samsung Display has been supplying its quantum dot (QD)-OLED panels to Samsung for its OLED TVs while rival LG Display supplies its white (W)-OLED panels.
Up to last year, Samsung has used mostly QD-OLED panels from Samsung Display in its OLED TVs.
For S90C, S90D’s predecessor last year, the company used only QD-OLED panels in 55, 65, and 75-inch models and only used W-OLED for the 83-inch model. This is only because Samsung Display makes QD-OLED panels in the three sizes.
However, following LG Display’s request not to put W-OLED as below in tier to QD-OLED, Samsung is planning to adopt W-OLED on a wider scale, sources said.
Still, for the S95D series Samsung will continue to only use QD-OLED, they said.
Meanwhile, the company planned to launch a lower-tier S85D series that only uses W-OLED but this plan has not been finalized.
For S90D, 55, 65, and 75-inch will use both types of panels while the 42, 48, and 83-inch models will use W-OLED.
Samsung is likely to offer W-OLED in certain regions and QD-OLED in others.
There are conflicting opinions on whether one technology is superior to the other in viewing angle, brightness, and color gamut.
However, this could be meaningless to the set maker who can also make its own alterations to the panel.
