A researcher at LG Display that led the company’s development of a rollable organic light emitting diode (OLED) panel have won the top prize in an event hosted by the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO), the company said on Wednesday.
Kim In-joo of LG Display won the King of Inventions award in the 55th Invention Day event that took place at Yeouido.
Kim was instrumental in the design of the rollable OLED panel from the start, the company said. He joined LG Display in 1999. He developed the slim and narrow module technology to make TVs thinner back in 2008. Kim also developed the side sealing technology that finishes the sides of panels back in 2013.
LG said it applied ultra-thin glasses and integrated and miniaturized the circuits on the panel substrate to make it rollable. The company reinvented all the components necessary for a rollable display __ from the thin film encapsulation materials to the back cover __ which secured it 54 patents from KIPO. 33 patents have been filed abroad as well.
