Iljin Composites will supply more hydrogen storage systems and fuel tanks to Hyundai Motor Company, the company said on Tuesday.
It has supplied the same goods for city buses to the car giant back in May of last year.
Iljin Composites will now supply those for policy buses and inter-city buses, it said.
South Korea is planning to produce 6.2 million hydrogen fuel cell cars and install 1200 charging stations. It plans to supply a total of 40,000 hydrogen fuel cell buses by 2040.
Iljin said it plans to expand its production capacity in line with this plan. The company’s subsidiary, Iljin Diamond, which it has 86.95% stake in, is the sole producer of fuel tank for hydrogen fuel cell cars in South Korea.
The company began supplying its goods to Hyundai, starting in 2014 with the Tuscon. It was the sole supplier of fuel tanks for Nexo in 2018.
Iljiin wraps carbon fiber (type 4) around a highly durable, circular plastics. It is 60% lighter and 10 times more durable than type 1 fuel tanks.
