Cover has latest Gorilla Glass
Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 2 has a similar surface hardness for its cover window on the main screen as the Galaxy Z Flip, people knowledgeable on the matter told TheElec on Wednesday.
Some processes to make the cover windows for the Fold 2 were changed and the surface hardness is slightly improved compared to the Galaxy Z Flip but consumers won’t notice much of a difference, the person said.
Meaningful improvement on the surface hardness for foldable screens will likely launch next year at the earliest, they added.
The Fold 2 also has ultrathin glass, called UTG by Samsung, applied like the Z Flip.
UTG cover windows have a special protective film attached atop it using adhesives to protect it from breaking and improve touch sensitivity.
Using shot objects intentionally on the UTG will leave scratch marks on the film. Companies are attempting to overcome this to further improve the foldable experience.
Samsung used polyimide (PI) film for its first foldable smartphone, the Galaxy Fold, instead of UTG that was introduced later.
The PI film also had a protective film attached atop it which had hardness problems.
The 6.2-inch cover display has Corning’s latest Gorilla Glass Victus, but the other side has Gorilla Glass 6 applied. Victus boasts double the scratch resistance to 6 and can handle 2 meters drops which is an increase by 0.4 meters.
Samsung liked us the Gorilla Glass 6 for the backside as when coupled with a case it will be sufficient to handle drops.
Galaxy Z Flip 5G uses Gorilla Glass Victus, unlike the LTE version that used Gorilla Glass 6 The Galaxy Note20 Ultra uses Gorilla Glass Victus.
Samsung is planning to make 500,000 units of Fold 2 as initial stock and is expected to aim for between 700,000 to 800,000 units sales by the end of the year. The company is adjusting its shipment target on a weekly bases, taking COVID-19 pandemic into account.
