Samsung Electro-Mechanics has won orders from Samsung Electronics to supply the main camera modules of the Galaxy A52 and A72 smartphones launching in the first half of 2021, TheElec has learned.

The two models combined sell around 30 million units a year and will allow Samsung Electro-Mechanics to secure a footing in the mid-tier smartphone camera market.

Galaxy A52 has quad camera in its back and Galaxy A72 a penta camera setup. Samsung Electro-Mechanics will supply one camera modules for each smartphone that will be used as the main camera.

Galaxy A72 will have a 64MP main camera. The Galaxy A52’s main camera MP is not yet known but its predecessor the A51 had a 48MP shooter.

Samsung Electro-Mechanics’ winning of the orders will intensify the competition between camera module makers in South Korea.

Samsung Electronics plans to apply optical image stabilization in some of its Galaxy A smartphones launching next year.

This has put pressures on camera module makers to win the orders for the most high-end modules with such features.

Overall, Samsung will be ordering more camera modules as it launches more smartphones with triple, quad and penta setups. Last year, the majority of the company’s smartphones had dual cameras except high-tier mid-range models and flagships.

But next year more smartphones will have at least triple cameras on their backs.

In July, Samsung Electro-Mechanics have said it was considering entering the mid-tier smartphone camera market.

The company said it expected demand for high resolution and optical zoom to rise in mid-tier models going forward. Samsung Electro-Mechanics said it will secure price competitiveness to expand in the market.

The poor sales of the Galaxy S20 series that launched earlier this year was likely a cause for Samsung Electro-Mechanics to enter into the mid-range sector. The company previously mostly supplied high-end modules for flagship smartphones, but the premium smartphone market is slowing down.

Samsung Electro-Mechanic’s module solution business, which produces camera modules, saw its second quarter sales fall 27% year over year to 604.8 billion won.
