Apple on Tuesday unveiled its self-developed PC processor M1.

The chip will power its new 13-inch MacBook Pro, MacBook Air and Mac Mini.

Cupertino has powered its iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch with its self-developed Arm-based system-on-a-chip (Soc) in the past but this is its first for its notebook series.

It has used Intel CPU for its notebooks until now.

Apple plans to have all its Mac series be powered by its own chips within the next two years. CEO Tim Cook has said in June at WWDC 2020 that the total transition to Apple Silicon will take two years.

This seems to indicate that the 16-inch MacBook Pro and iMac series will also be powered by the M series at a later date.

M1 has eight CPU cores __ four high performance cores and four high efficiency ones. It also has an 8 core GPU as well as a 16 core neural engine for artificial intelligence (AI). DRAM is embedded within the chip package.

Mac PCs powered by M1 will be able to run iPhone and iPad apps thanks to them using the same CPU architectures.

M1 was made using the 5-nanometer (nm) process and has 16 billion transistors. The number of transistors is 35% higher than its mobile SoC the A14 __ which had 11.8 billion __ unveiled in October.

Taiwan’s TSMC likely contract produced the chips.

Apple touted that its new MacBook Air powered by M1 has 3.5 times better CPU performance, five times the GPU performance and 9 times faster AI machine learning compared to its predecessor.

Its 13-inch MacBook Pro has 2.8 times the CPU performance, five times the GPU performance and 11 times faster machine learning compared to its predecessor, the company said.

Mac Mini has three times the CPU performance, six times in GPU and 15 times faster machine learning speed, Apple claimed.

Cook said M1 was Apple’s most powerful self-developed chip to date, adding that when combined with Big sur, Mac’s OS, it will offer faster and longer lasting battery life.

The company also vowed to minimize app compatibility issue from the CPU change. In June, Apple showed off the developer transition kit Mac mini for developers.
