Samsung Electronics won’t be unveiling a new Galaxy Z Flip smartphone at its upcoming Unpacked event expected in early 2021, TheElec has learned.
The new model of the foldable smartphone will be unveiled after the first quarter, people familiar with the matter said. For smartphones, only the Galaxy S21 series will be unveiled at Unpacked, they said.
The separate release date was set to avoid cannibalization between the models.
This year, Samsung introduced the first Galaxy Z Flip together with the Galaxy S20 series in February. The Flip went into sale the same month. The S20 series began sales in March.
Samsung will began mass production of Galaxy S21 next month. Suppliers have already begun producing the necessary components. This is a month earlier than the S20 series.
The new Galaxy Buds 2 will be unveiled at the upcoming Unpacked with the S21 series. Samsung has strengthened the water proofing for the new earphones. Samsung unveiled the first Galaxy Buds in 2019 with the Galaxy S10.
The code name for the Buds 2 is Attic. Samsung is planning to manufacturer around 1.5 million units of them between December and January at its factory in Vietnam. In February, some volume will be produced at its factory in Brazil as well.
Samsung is planning produce around 6 million units of the S21 series between December and January. The number was conservative and similar to the initial production volume of past S smartphones, the people said.
The South Korean tech giant offer different color options for the Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21 Plus and Galaxy S21 Ultra.
The standard S21 will come in gray, pink, violet and white. The S21 Plus will be offered in black, silver and violet. The S21 Ultra will come in black and silver.
Samsung is expected to continue the Z Flip series and Z Fold series next year, while it is considering adding one to three new series of foldable smartphones as well, people familiar with the matter said.
