They can send optical signals 5km without distortion
South Korea’s Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute said Thursday that it has developed a radio over fiber (RoF) 5G mmWave optical repeater.
The institute has handed over the technology to HFR, Lightron and other companies.
ETRI developed the technology in collaboration with KT, FRTek and HFR as part of the Ministry of Science and ICT’s 5G analogue indoor DAS development project.
The institute said the repeater was cheaper to install than radio stations.
It will offer 20Gbps 5G data transfer speed in areas such as large shopping malls, transportation stations and harbors.
RoF sends wireless signals optically without changing them to digital signals. It will allow data transfer of up to 5km without distortion, ETRI said.
