LG Energy Solution is using V-One Tech’s battery inspection equipment for long axis batteries, TheElec has learned.

The equipment is being used for LG’s pilot line for Ultium Cells, its joint venture with General Motors.

V-One Tech is supplying the equipment only for LG. It will be used for batteries with axis longer than 500mm.

LG is planning to focus on producing 300mm and 500mm batteries going forward. It has previously made batteries in for diverse sizes but this has negatively effected productivity.

The company’s equipment is used the inspect the alignment of cathode and anode of battery cells. It is a vision equipment that inspects the encapsulation status of the pouch film and the width of the cathode and anode tabs.

LG Energy is using the lamination process that stacks and align the cathode and anode atop the separator as well as the stacking method that stacks the cell magazine. The process is called lamination and stack.

The process is considered more effective to back the axis of batteries longer than the Z-stacking method. The materials are more prone to not fold properly or flap when they are longer.

Lamination and stack aligns the batter material beforehand which makes it less susceptible to this problem. However, the trade off is that the cells are longer which makes it prone to wrinkles when pressed. V-One Tech’s equipment is used to catch these potential defects.

V-One Tech has previously supplied its equipment for LG’s factory in China and Poland, prior to supplying them for Ultium Cells.

The company has posted 20.3 billion won in accumulated sales in 2020 as of the third quarter, 88% higher than the same time period in 2019.

Ultium Cells is designed for up to 30GWh annual production capacity. The factory is to go live in 2022.
