'D Film, the Secret Weapon'
Samsung's new premium TV has dramatically improved left and right viewing angle performance.
Recently On the 14th, Samsung Electronics’ Video Display Business Division completed development of 'D film', special material for enhancing the marketability of premium QLED TVs. This film is applied to the top of a polarizer. It has the effect of adding a microlens to each pixel. If you attach this film, the light can spread evenly. The viewing angle performance is heightened. It is reported that this technology has been applied to a new premium TV to be released soon.
.
The D of D film comes from the word ‘Diffuse.’ Samsung uses a VA (Vertical Alignment) liquid crystal display (LCD) panel on its premium TVs. Compared with competitive IPS, VA has an excellent contrast ratio but the viewing angle is a weak point. Samsung Electronics has overcome these weaknesses with D film.
The issue of the reduction of the contrast ratio caused by the addition of D film to QLED TV has been solved by increasing the backlight unit (BLU) brightness. The four-layer structure including two polarizers, D film, and quantum dot film has been born. D film will be supplied by MNTECH, Shinseong Nanotech, and Optron Tech, which produces QDEF exclusively. It is currently being mass-produced. There are three suppliers because of the yield and price. D film costs are in the early $100 range, which is two to three times that of polarizers. As it is applied to premium TV, the cost burden has increased further due to the application of quantum dot film. By increasing the number of suppliers, the company aims to lower the prices a little.
"D film is a technology that has brought LCD panel performance to the extreme. By spreading the light more brighter and more evenly, not only the viewing angle and color but also the contrast ratio can be improved" an industry observer said.
