South Korean telecom component maker Ace Technologies have won a contract from UAE-based telco Etisalat to supply in-building antenna, the company said on Tuesday.

The company is expected to sign another contract for the supply and began shipping the antenna to the telco in the second quarter.

This is Ace Technologies’ first deal with Etisalat. The telco is based in Abu Dhabi and services to 149 million people in 16 countries in the Middle East, Asia and Africa. In 2019, the company recorded 52.2 billion AED in sales.

Etisalat is chowing strong interest in Ace Technologies’ in-building integrated antenna, which supports all spectrum between 600MHz to 6GHz in one antenna and can be used to service 5G, 4G LTE, 3G and Wi-Fi. The antenna had been supplied to Korean telcos SK Telecom and KT before.

Etisalat wanted to the strategic partnership with the Korean firm as the telco wanted to significantly improve in-building coverage and data capacity at metropolitan areas in the Middle East such as Dubai where there are many super high skyscrapers, an Ace Technologies spokesperson said. Starting with the in-building antenna, the Korean company will work hard to supply core products such as base station antenna to the telco, they said.

In a statement, Ace Technologies CEO Hong Ick-pyoh said the company, through its strategic partnership with Etisalat, will aim to become the main antenna supplier in Central Asia.

Despite the supply deal for in-building antenna with Etisalat, Ace Technologies’ mainstay is outdoor base station antenna. According to ABI Research, Ace Technologies was ranked fifth in mobile antenna. Huawei was the leader, followed by CommScope, Kathrein and Rosenberger.

Ace Technologies aiming for sales of 440 billion won this year. Last year, the company is expected to have posted early-200 billion won in sales and operating loss. In 2018 and 2019, the company posted late-300 billion won in sales.

Investments into 5G is expected to gain tailwind this year after slowing down in 2020 due to the pandemic as the US has just wrapped up auctioning 5G spectrum.
