Samsung begins global rollout of Neo QLED TVs

Offered in 50 to 85-inches in 4K and 8K resolutions

Samsung Electronics said on Wednesday that it will launch 21 models in its new Neo QLED TV series.

This is three more than the 18 models rival LG Electronics plans to launch in its OLED TV series.

Neo QLED TVs are liquid crystal display (LCD) TVs that use MiniLEDs as their backlighting. It is an upgrade from Samsung’s QLED TV series.

The Korean tech giant said at its online event called Unbox & Discover that it applied quantum matrix technology and quantum processors on its Neo QLED TVs. The models controls the luminance in 12-bit with 4,096 steps, allowing for high contrast ratio and detailed blacks, the company said.

It also has 16 neural engines that allows it to optimize 4K and 8K resolutions. A total of 8 models will support 8K that will come in three series and four different sizes (85, 75, 65 and 55-inches). A total of 13 models will support 4K resolution, which will come in three series and five different sizes (85, 75, 65, 55 and 50-inches). In South Korea, 8K will be offered in five models and 4K in nine.

Samsung said Neo QLED TVs will also have upped gaming and smart features, artificial intelligence based sound system and all new designs.

For gaming, the models will support AMD FreeSync Premium Pro, 5.8ms input lag, support for 21:9 and 32:9 screen ratio and a gaming bar.

In sound, the TVs will offer optimized sound for the environment, moving sound depending on what is shown on screen and a surround sound system that incorporates both the TV and surrounding speakers.

Neo QLED TV is also 15mm thick, while the 8K models will be near bezel-less.

Sales in South Korea began on Wednesday. The 8K model at the biggest screen size of 85-inch can cost up to 19.3 million won. The cheapest 4K model at 50-inch screen size costs 2.29 million won.

Samsung also showed off its Micro LED TVs at the online event. The TVs use micrometer-sized LEDs that emit light on their own. It uses inorganic material, which prevents it from suffering burn-in, the company said.

The company showed off new 99-inch and 88-inch sized Micro LED TVs at the event. In December, it showed off an 110-inch model that costs 170 million won.

Micro LED TVs comes with upscaling processor, 5.1-channel sound and what Samsung calls a monolith design that makes ti seem one with the walls they are attached to.

Samsung also unveiled 2021-models of its LifeStyle TV series, The Frame, The Serif, The Sero, The Premiere and The Terrace.

The company said it reduced the thickness of The Frame to 24.9mm for this year’s model to make it look more like an actual frame. The TV will be offered in two bezel types and five colors. It will be offered with various stands to fit in different rooms. The TVs will also have 6GB internal memory that can save up to 1,200 files in 4K resolution.

The Frame will be offered in 32, 55, 65 and 75-inches in South Korea.

Samsung also unveiled its 2021-model Odyssey G9 gaming monitor, which has MiniLED technology applied. The monitor will offer 240Hz screen refresh rate and 1ms response time.

The company’s TV boss Han Jong-hee stressed that Samsung became the world’s largest TV vendor for 15 years straight as of 2020 and it will continue to reign at the top with its so-called Screen for All vision.
