
Seoul Semiconductor ranked third in LED package in 2020 in terms of sales.
The company, citing data from market research firm Omdia, said its LED package sales grew 4.3% year-on-year, allowing to surpass Lumileds to take third place.
Japan’s Nichia ranked first with US$1.766 billion in sales. Germany’s Osram ranked second with US$1.171 billion in sales.
Lumileds took fourth place with US$891 million and Samsung Electronics (S-LED) fifth place US$758 million.
Back in 2012, Seoul Semiconductor ranked fifth place with US$760 million in sales, while Samsung ranked third with US$1.119 billion.
LG InnoTek was ranked seventh in that year with US$589 million in sales, but the firm exited the LED business in 2020.
Seoul Semiconductor credited its rise to a focus on research and development. The firm said it spend around 10% of its sales in R&D and now has 14,000 patents.
It also said most South Korean companies were moving its facilities to China to lower cost but Seoul Semiconductor was the only company that continued to manufacture LED package in South Korea.
