Samsung Electronics said on Tuesday that it has launched a new enterprise solid-state drive (SSD) for servers based on the 24G SAS (SAS-4) specification.

PM1653 is made using the company’s Gen 6 V-NAND. It will come in various capacities up to 30.72TB.

SAS, or Serial Attached SCSI, is an interface designed for high-speed data transfer in servers and large computers. SAS-4 has two times the data transfer rate of SAS-3 at 22.5Gbps.

PM1653 has a random read speed of 800K IOPS. Its sequential reading speed stands at 4,300MB/s, double that of its predecessor.

The new SSD will also support previous generation of SAS interfaces such as SAS-3. This will allow customers to flexible operate their servers, Samsung said.

PM1653 also supports dual-port. If one port malfunctions, another port will continue the service.

Samsung will collaborate with host bud adapter firm Broadcom so that customers can upgrade their storage systems to SAS-4, it said.

According to Omdia, the server SSD market is expected to grow an average 8.7% per year from 2020 to 2025. In 2025, the market is expected to be worth US$26 billion.
