Fixed price of DRAM surged in April from a month ago, according to DRAMeXchange.
The price of PC DRAM (DDR4 8Gb) at the end of the April was US$3.8, an increase of 26.67% from the previous month.
It is the highest rate of increase since the January of 2017, when the price of DRAM increased by 35.8% from the previous month.
Fixed prices of DRAM fell throughout the months of the second half of 2020. Price reached their lowest point at US$2.85% in October.
Market research firm TrendForce said DRAM prices increased from PC OEMs buying them in bulk amid the shortage.
Mainstream module DRAM (DDR4 8Gb SO DIMM) increased by 24% in April from the previous month, reaching US$32.4.
This increase has to do with increased production rate of notebooks, the research firm noted.
PC OEMs are aiming for a sales growth of 20% this year, TrendForce said. Notebook production in the second quarter is expected to increase by 8% compared to the first quarter, the research firm said. This will cause DRAM inventories of PC OEMs to drop. Prices of PC DRAM will further increase in the third quarter from this, TrendForce added.
Demand for server memory is also increasing. Fixed price of server DRAM increased by up to 18.57% in April from the previous month. As server companies Amazon, Google and others are applying new CPUs, they are expected to secure more memories going forward, TrendForce added.
