Samsung Electronics is aiming to ship a million units of its recently unveiled Galaxy Book Pro series of notebooks this year, TheElec has learned.

The company unveiled the Galaxy Book Pro 360 and Galaxy Book Pro last month. Each model comes in 15.6-inch and 13.3-inch variants.

Samsung applied OLED panels for the Windows notebooks for the first time.

Demand for notebooks as well as produce prices have recently increased, a person familiar with the matter said. Samsung’s target of a million units was not unrealistic, they said.

The South Korean tech giant is not a major player in notebooks. According to Strategy Analytics, in 2020, Lenovo was the world’s largest shipper of notebooks with 54.9 million units and 24.2% market share. This was followed by HP with 52.2 million units and 23% market share and Dell with 35.4 million units and 15.6% market share. Apple ranked fourth with 19.7 million units and 8.7% market share and Acer fifth with 16.5 million units and 7.3% market share.

However, overall notebook market is expected to grow this year. Another market research firm TrendForce expects notebook shipment this year to increase 10% over 2020 with a shipment of 220 million units. Last year, notebook shipment reached 200 million units, an increase of 23% from 2019.

Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics will also have to procure enough OLED panels from Samsung Display to reach the target.

According UBI Research CEO Choong Hoon Yi, Samsung Display is aiming to ship two million notebook OLED panels this year, but likely will only manufacture 1.5 million units of them. This means the portion Samsung Electronics will get from its affiliate will be around 500,000 units, Yi claimed.

Whether Samsung Display decides to spent more to expand its notebook OLED production lines will be determined by how well OLED notebooks made by Samsung and others perform in the market. The display maker is currently manufacturing notebook OLED panels at its A2 production line.

Iljin Display, a touch screen panel supplier, is also hoping its customer Samsung Electronics’ OLED notebooks perform well in the market. Iljin previously also supplied touch screen panels for Samsung’s smartphones. But the Korean tech giant in recent years expanded the use of Y-Octa panels, which don’t require the touch screen panels. Iljin had reported two straight years of loss as of 2020 as a result.
