Mando Hella Electronics will build a road surface detection system at the city of Pohang, TheElec has learned.
The company has formed a consortium with Posco and other companies for the project called Vision Zero Consortium.
The system will sense in real time frosts, water curtains and damages on the road to find areas that need to repair.
It will comprise of road sensing, GPS and vision cameras, and receivers. Mando Hella will be providing its smart wheel sensor and antenna that uses the tire to check the condition of roads and transfer the collected data.
The technology is similar to Mando Hella’s smart tire monitoring sensor technology.
The sensor is placed within tires and can collect data on tire pressures and road surface conditions. The data is transferred to the cloud. Mando Hella has said this can increase safety of advanced driver assistance systems.
Mando Hella’s recent move is closely tied to its parent company Mando’s plan to form a new subsidiary called Mando Mobility Solutions in the second half of the year.
In June, Mando has said it plans to split off its ADAS business unit and Mando Hella to form Mando Mobility Solutions. Mando Hella will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Mando Mobility Solutions.
South Korea analysts expect Mando Mobility Solutions to expand sales from ADAS in China as well as secure new sales from India.
Mando could also have Mando Mobility Solutions go public to secure funds, they said.
