Likely completed the development of vertical deposition equipment

The world's No.1 display equipment maker Applied Materials (AMAT) of the US has developed OLED deposition equipment and has actively been engaged in sales for Chinese display makers since the end of last year. Below the market’s unparalleled No. 1, Japan's Canon Tokki, the competition for the No. 2 spot is expected to be fierce among SFA (SNU Precision) of Korea, Sunik system, and Ulvac of Japan.

A deposition equipment industry official said, "AMT has been participating in bids for Chinese display makers since the end of last year. Compatibility between different process equipment and user interface (UI) seem to be great strengths. As far as I know, no orders have been received yet."

Display companies will use AMT's chemical vapor deposition (CVD) equipment for thin film transistor (TFT) deposition and inorganic deposition equipment for thin film encapsulation (TFE) process in their flexible OLED production lines.

According to market researcher DSCC, AMT ranked first in the display equipment market with the 20.6% market share last year, surpassing Japan's Canon (18.6%). Canon had the top market share (20.7%) in 2017.

AMT developed a vertical deposition method-based equipment instead of the conventional horizontal deposition system. KPS, a domestic mask tensioning equipment maker, developed a vertical masking mask tensioner with AMT. Mask tensioning equipment holds the fine metal masks (FMM) used in deposition processes.

AMT seems to have completed the development of vertical deposition equipment as it started sales for Chinese display companies. The vertical deposition method is a method designed to improve mask and substrate deflection in a large area. There is no horizontal deposition equipment larger than the 6th generation (half cut) in the flexible OLED production line.

The domestic display industry is seeing that the investment by Chinese Royole is imminent. At the time of Royole's first investment, the 5.5-generation deposition equipment was supplied by SFA. An official of another maker of equipment for the deposition process said, "This time there is an observation that the Sunik System is in a more advantageous position. The extra investment by Royole has been postponed until now, which was first mentioned last year. It's a recent stance that a decision will be made in the second quarter."  He also added, "The company seems to be trying to lower the price by inducing competition among companies while taking time."
