South Korean battery equipment makers have won major deals to supply their kits to Vietnam’s VinFast for their 2.5GWh battery factory.

VinFast is currently building two 200PPM production lines to manufacture cylinder batteries at Hai Phong in Vietnam.

Wonik PNE has won a deal worth 32 billion won; TSI won a contract worth 11 billion won to supply their equipment.

Koem, Partech and PNT are also in talks for contracts with VinFast; they are likely to win the orders.

TSI will supply its mixing equipment, while PNT and Koem will supply their winders.

Partech is providing its assembly kit. Wonik PNE is supplying its formation equipment.

TSI will be receiving the raw material to put in its mixer. The slurry that is made from this will be made into cathode and anode. These will go through Koem’s winders.

The roll from this will go through Partech’s assembly equipment, where materials will be put in them.

The finished battery cell will go to Wonik IPS’ formation equipment and become a completed battery cell.

Slurry made from mixing equipment becomes cathodes and anodes when aluminum and copper foils are added to them.

Winders makes these into jelly rolls. These, with the addition of more materials, go through the formation process to become batteries that can charge.

PNT makes coaters and roll press equipment that handles the slurry; it is in talks to supply these kits to VinFast.

Partech manufactures notching, stacking and folding equipment used to make cathode and anode tabs. It will likely only supply its notching kit as for cylinder batteries, winders take up the role of stacking and folding used in other battery types.

VinFast is Vietnam’s only automobile manufacturer. It signed a joint venture agreement with Chinese battery cell maker Gotion High Tech last month. It is planning to research and manufacture lithium iron phosphate batteries. Volkswagen is Gotion’s largest shareholder.
