For cost reduction
Hyundai Motor Company has begun co-development of ceramic coatings for hydrogen fuel-cell separator plates with Swedish firm Impact Coatings, TheElec has learned.
The move was being done to cut the cost of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles like Hyundai’s own Nexo car models.
Using ceramic coatings could cut the cost of the separator plate component and improve its durability, a Hyundai executive said at an event in Seoul.
Impact Coatings has the technology to turn ceramic into a gaseous form to ensure a thin coating on surfaces.
Hyundai Motors had acquired a 10% stake in the Swedish firm back in 2019.
Separator plate accounts for up to 25% of the cost of manufacturing a hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle.
