The mobile inertial measurement unit (IMU) market is expected to be worth US$838 million in 2026, according to Yole Development.
IMU uses the accelerometer, gyroscope or magnetometer within the device to report the angular rate and direction of a moving object,
It is used in smartphones and tablets to analyze the user’s movement.
An inertial sensor based on micro electro mechanical system is inside the IMU.
The market is led by STMicroelectronics, Invensense and Bosch.
According to Systemplus consulting, 53% of smartphones launched since 2019 used IMU from STMicroelectronics, followed by Invensense’s 34% and Bosch’s 9%.
Bosch saw its share in the market increase to 26% last year, while STMicroelectronics and Invensense controlled 43% and 24%, respectively.
Yole Development expects MEMS-based IMU market to grow 5% on average every year from 2020 to 2026.
