Samsung on Thursday said it has begun supplying new memory chips for electric vehicles and other automotive applications.

The new chips for infotainment systemㄴ are 256GB PCIe Gen 3 NVMe ball grid array (BGA) solid-state drive (SSD), 2GB GDDR6 DRAM and 2GB DDR4 DRAM.

Those for autonomous driving systems include 2GB GDDR6 DRAM and 128GB UFS.

Samsung said automotive replacement cycle was being shortened from up to eight years to up to four years, while requirements are advancing at the same rate as servers.

These new chips are being offered to meet this trend, the company added.

Infotainment systems are more and more offering high-definition maps, video streaming and 3D gaming, Samsung said, while more autonomous driving systems are being applied to vehicles.

This requires high spec SSDs and DRAMs to support, it added.

Samsung said its 256GB BGA SSD offers 2,100MB/s sequential read speed and 300MB/s sequential write speed.

Meanwhile, its 2GB GDDR6 DRAM offers 14Gbps data rate per pin.

All the new chips meet AEC-Q100 qualification for automotive reliability and will operate at extreme temperatures, Samsung added.
