Samsung manufactured around 12 million units of smartphones during the month of May this year.

This was 20% less than a year ago, while accumulated production volume for the first four months of the year was also lower than a year ago, sources said.

This dip, if it continues throughout the year, could Samsung’s shipment target of around 300 million units this year, they added.

Samsung is planning to manufacture around 240 million units of its shipment goal by itself with the remainder being outsourced to contract manufacturers.

The company likely manufactured fewer phones than it planned in May due to remaining inventory.

The South Korean tech giant manufactured around 80 million units from January to April, but some of these are also yet to ship, the sources said.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the lockdown measures in China from Covid-19 are likely causing demand to drop.

Samsung is planning to increase its manufacturing volume in June back to 20 million units.

However, it is expecting to drop its manufacturing volume during the third quarter to mid-10 million units per month.

Despite these drops, the company is planning to maintain the production of its flagship smartphone brands such as the Galaxy S series to protect its margins.
