Samsung has scrapped its plan to develop and launch a Galaxy S22 Fan Edition (FE) model to focus on expanding the sales of Galaxy S22 Ultra, TheElec has learned.
The company had initially planned to manufacture around 3 million units of Galaxy S22 FE this year.
But as the chip shortage continues and the Galaxy S22 Ultra model selling better than expected, Samsung has canceled the development of the Galaxy S22 FE model, sources said.
The chips it planned to use for the Galaxy S22 FE model have also been reassigned for use on the Galaxy S22 Ultra model.
Sources said the company’s move was expected as it faced trouble securing enough chips even for the three models of the Galaxy S22 series when they launched earlier this year.
Samsung was expected to manage this situation by allocating chips to the more popular model of the series.
Pushing Galaxy S22 Ultra is also more advantageous in terms of revenue and profitability.
Samsung sold around 10 million units of the Galaxy S22 Ultra during the first half of the year.
The company had planned to manufacture components enough to make 10 million units of Galaxy S22 Ultra for the whole year, so the sales figure beats its expectation.
Meanwhile, Samsung is still planning to launch a Galaxy S23 FE model next year with the aim to ship 3 million units annually.
For the Galaxy S23 series, Samsung is planning to ship 8.5 million units of the Galaxy S23 standard model, 6.5 million units of the S23 Plus model and 13 million units of the Galaxy S23 Ultra model.
