South Korean chip fabless firm LX Semicon has formed a research team dedicated to developing display driver ICs for automobiles, TheElec has learned.
The team is within the research team that reports directly to CEO Boik Sohn.
The team, called Auto Development Part, will develop display driver ICs for central information display, cluster, head-up display and other displays on automobiles.
Though automotive display accounts for only a small part of the global display market, it is a fast-growing sector.
Premium electric vehicles and vehicles with autonomous functions are applying larger displays that require more display driver ICs to run.
According to analyst firm Omdia, the worldwide display market is expected to grow 4% on average annually from 2020 to 2029 based on surface area. The automotive display sector will grow 11% on average annually over the same time period, the firm said in its forecast.
LX Semicon’s main customer LG Display is also pushing OLED for automotive display applications.
