South Korea’s Interflex will be supplying Huawei Technologies’ flagship Mate 30 later this year with the rigid flexible printed circuit board (RFPCB) for OLED displays via BOE, industry sources said on July 18.

RFPCB is a key part of smartphone devices connecting the displays with the main electronic boards.

This marks the first time for Interflex to supply through BOE, and not its usual partner Samsung Display. The firm expects its RFPCB revenues from BOE to reach 50 billion won ($42.4 million), while to Sunny Optical, it anticipates sales reaching 100 billion from the RFPCB for camera modules.

Sunny Optical will be the vehicle for selling to Oppo, Vivo and Huawei in the latter half of this year.

Interflex’s business with Huawei had shrunk following the US government’s sanctions against Huawei in May, but it has recently been recovering, according to market sources.

Despite it, Interflex is likely to slip into the red due to the leftover OLED panels and TSP RFPCB for the Apple iPhone X. Back in 2017, the supplier had logged 805.5 billion won of revenues and 6.1 billion won of operating profit from selling OLED displays and TSFP RFPCB for Apple.

But later that year, a glitch was found in the iPhoneX, causing Apple to return to the previous FPCB method for the 2018 iPhone. This caused Interflex to incur an operating loss of 66 billion won from its business with Apple.

Under the circumstances, Interflex has on the one hand been wooing China, while on the other, diversifying its portfolio to camera module RFPCB from focusing mainly on display RFPCB.

In the first quarter of this year, Interflex recorded 67 billion won of sales, and an operating profit of 4 billion won. Its sales target this year is 400 billion won.
