Samsung’s chip division has returned to profitability in the first quarter on the back of the recovery of the memory chip market.

The South Korean electronics maker said on Tuesday that it recorded 71.92 trillion won in revenue and 6.61 trillion won in operating profit, an increase of 13% and 932%, respectively, from the same period a year earlier.

Its chip division, called Device Solutions Division, recorded 23.14 trillion won in revenue, a surge of 68% from a year earlier. It also swung back to profit to 1.91 trillion won.

Samsung credited the performance to an increase in memory chip prices thanks to strong demand for high-end chips such as high-bandwidth memory, DDR5, server solid-state drives (SSD), and UFS 4.0.

System LSI, the division’s logic business unit, saw strong sales for SoCs and sensors but display driver ICs slowed down. Samsung Foundry also reduced its loss rate from increased operational efficiency, the company said.

Samsung said it expects demand improvement and price increase for memory chips backed by AI and demand from servers and storage.

Meanwhile, the Device Experience Division, which makes smartphones and TVs, recorded 4.07 trillion won in operating profit, a slight 3% drop from a year earlier.

The Mobile Experience Business under the division contributed the bulk in operating profit with 3.51 trillion won.
