Samsung SDI is planning to upgrade the humidity sensors it uses in its battery production lines, TheElec has learned.

Battery manufacturing lines are traditionally kept in a dry room condition, but accurately sensing the humidity of these conditions using the currently used capacitive humidity sensor has been limited.

Samsung SDI is planning to apply a chilled-mirror method, where the air is frozen and the temperature in which dew form is used to measure the humidity levels.

The accuracy of this method is superior to a capacitive humidity sensor, where the sensor absorbs the air and measures the capacitance to measure the humidity level.

The chilled-mirror method also doesn’t require periodic calibration as in capacitive methods. 

Samsung SDI is planning to apply chilled-mirror humidity sensors first at its facilities in Cheonan and Ulsan, South Korea. Next year, this will be expanded to its factories in the US and Hungary.

The sensor was developed by South Korean firm Samyoung S&C, with the pair having started the development of the sensor in 2021.

There are over a hundred such sensors per 1GWh of production capacity. 

Samsung SDI’s move also means traditional capacitive humidity sensors made by Finland’s Vaisala will be less used. They cost less than chilled-mirror sensors but require the purchase of additional sensors per two years for calibration purposes.

Accurate measurement of humidity will allow Samsung SDI to increase its production yield. It can better control the viscosity of raw materials and better control production processes such as those for electrode formation.
