Samsung Foundry to launch BSPDN, silicon photonics in 2027

Samsung Foundry is expected to launch 1.4-nanometer (nm) process, back side power delivery network (BSPDN), and silicon photonics in 2027.

During its Samsung Foundry Forum held in San Jose on Wednesday, the South Korean tech giant’s contract chip production business unit announced its technology roadmap for the AI age.

Samsung Foundry president Siyoung Choi stressed during his keynote at the annual event that high-performance and low-power chips were the most important factors in realizing AI.

The company also introduced a turnkey service called Samsung AI Solutions, which it called a one-stop solution that will allow customers to use Samsung’s Foundry, Memory, and Advanced Package services at once.

This will streamline customers’ supply chain and allow them to launch products 20% faster, Samsung explained. The company said it saw its AI orders jump over 80% over the past year.

At the forum, Samsung also shared its plan to adopt silicon photonics in 2027, its first such announcement.

This is the use of optical fiber to transmit data on the chip, which is expected to drastically improve data transmission speed compared to I/O. Samsung is an investor in silicon photonics firm Celestial AI.

A 2nm process with BSPDN is also expected to launch in 2027. This is behind rival Intel’s plan to launch them this year.

BSPDN has the power rail on the backside of the wafer to prevent the bottleneck between the power rail and the signal line. This improves the power, performance, and area of the chip.

Samsung also shared its launch date of other 2nm processes. Those for mobile, SF2 and SF2P, will launch in 2025 and 2026, respectively. 2Nm processes aimed at AI and high-performance computing will launch in 2026, before the one with BSPDN. The company will also launch a 2nm process for automotive in 2027.

Samsung also reiterated that it plans to launch a 1.4nm process in 2027 and said it was securing the performance and yield rate needed for the launch. The company is planning to adopt ASML’s High NA-EUV equipment next year, which will be used to make the process.
