SK Hynix is planning to spend 9.4 trillion won to build a new fab to respond to the high demand for memory chips caused by the AI boom.
The new fab will be built at Yongin Semiconductor Cluster, a new semiconductor industrial zone being pushed by the South Korean government.
The fab will start construction in March next year and be completed in May 2027, SK Hynix said.
The memory maker plans to build three additional fabs afterward sequentially to make Yongin Semiconductor Cluster a global AI chip production hub, the company said.
The new fab will manufacture next-generation DRAM and high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips.
It will be designed in a way so that it can also manufacture other chips depending on market demand when it is completed, SK Hynix said.
