Nanotech Energy is planning to manufacture its 2170 cylindrical battery using a South Korean contract manufacturer, TheElec has learned.
The South Korean manufacturer is expected to supply 3GWh worth of the batteries annually starting in 2026, sources said.
The batteries are for energy storage systems, e-mobility, and uninterrupted power supply and not electric vehicles, however, they added.
Nanotech Energy will supply the materials and design for the batteries, while the South Korean manufacturer will produce the cells.
TheElec couldn’t identify which South Korean firm was the order's prime candidate.
There are only a handful of domestic companies that can manufacture 2170 batteries.
LG Energy Solution and Samsung SDI can but have no prior history of manufacturing batteries for others.
Another less-known South Korean firm with plenty of manufacturing expertise will likely win the order.
California-based Nanotech Energy manufactures graphene-based batteries that are fire proof.
