LG Display had a demonstration comparing the 8K quantum dot LCDs with 4K OLED displays at the OLED Big Bang media day in Beijing on Sept. 19. The results showed the OLED panels being much more beneficial for eye health and energy efficiency.
"We believe the era of OLEDs has dawned in China after our Gen-8.5 OLED panel production lines in Guangzhou kicked off,” said Oh Chang-ho, head of LG Display’s TV business, at the event. "China is most likely to adapt to OLED TVs, given its high tolerance and acceptance for new products and technology.”
In a separate business strategy session, Ahn Seung-mo, the senior executive president of the promotion division said that LG expects the large-sized OLED panel market to reach 300,000 this year. In 2020, LG Display will work to expand to 1 million, and then to 2 million in 2021.
Market research firm IHS Markit figures show that up to 170,000 OLED TVs will be sold in China this year, with the number expected to grow to 450,000 next year.
The Big Bang promotion is a part of LG Display’s OLED promotional activities in China. Attending companies included LG Electronics, Skyworth, Hisense, Konka, Changchong, Sony, Philips, Suning, Gome and Jingdong. LGD also invited 50 media outlets in Beijing and Tianjin.
Earlier this year, LG Display held the first OLED Big Bang Promotion in 15 cities including Wuhan and Chongqing. In the latter half, the company plans to tour in 30 cities including Guizhou and Shenyang. Last month in Fuzhou, the South Korean display maker hosted another event comparing the 4K OLED LCD and the 8K Quantom dot LCD.
