South Korean supplier Kolon Industries expects another boost to its revenues as China’s Huawei Technologies has applied a double-layer of its Colorless Polyimide (CPI) film to the display cover of the Mate X for stronger durability.

Industry sources told The Elec on Nov. 20 that Huawei has applied a double layer of hard-coated CPI film to better protect the Mate X smartphone, which has an out-folding display that could be more prone to external pressure or shock.

“Two layers make the cover more durable, not to mention making the top layer more resilient against foreign substances or shock,” said explained industry watcher. A double layer of CPI also makes the phone less prone to creases or damage when it’s folded and unfolded, which happens quite frequently for foldable phones.

Industry experts said that Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy Fold, because it has a single layer of PET film added to hard-coated CPI film, has made it less bendable.

They add, however, that it’s not only how the phone folds, but other factors, such as how thick the display cover needs to be and the module underneath the screen must all be considered to decide whether to use a double layer of CPI.

As Kolon Industries supplies CPI to both Mate X and the Razr – the foldable smartphone launched last week by Motorola, analysts expect the firm to see boosted earnings from related sales. In its earnings report for the third quarter, the company said it has begun to mass-produce the cover film.

Razr is also seen to have used a double-layer of CPI film despite that it’s an in-folding clamshell-type.

Experts say the lackluster yield rate of China’s BOE, which supplies the OLED panels for the Mate X was another advantage for Kolon Industries, as this calls for more demand for the film. BOE also supplies panels to OLED for the Razr, along with China’s CSOT and Taiwan’s AUO.

Huawei has yet to reveal the numbers, but Mate X is selling as fast as it gets put on the shelves, according to retailers in China.

As of 2018, CPI film prices stood at KRW 400,000 per square meter. One square meter yields up to 30 units of 8-inch film sheets and 60 of 6.2-inch sheets. The Mate X sports an 8-inch display, while the Razr display measures 6.2-inches.
