The global wireless earphone market is forecast to grow 90% in 2020 to around 230 million units, according to market research firm CounterPoint Research on Dec. 6.
“The recent growth in the wireless earphone market closely resembles that of the smartphone market 10 years ago when the market grew 80% a year,” said Lee Yoon-jung, a researcher at CounterPoint.
The firm also said the current market leader Apple will secure a market share of up to 50% for this year after clawing back some ground in the fourth quarter of this year. In Q3, the figure had fallen to 45% from 60% in Q1. The prediction was based on the surging popularity of the AirPod Pro that was launched in October this year.
In 2020, however, Apple is likely to face more competition from companies like Samsung, Xiaomi and Huawei, along with a bit more unconventional rivals like Amazon, Google and Microsoft.
Earphones are also likely to have added functions, such as bio-sensing, water-proof and AI, while the pricing becomes more divsere as well.
