Samsung Electronics is planning to ship up to 8 million QLED TVs this year, up nearly 50% from last year’s 5.3 million in a bid to widen its gap with key rival LG Electronics in the high-end TV market, according to industry sources on Feb. 27.
Samsung’s market share in the global QLED market was around 90% last year, while LG Electronics had a 65% share in OLED TVs where it has a edge over Samsung.
Aside from Samsung, companies like Vizio, TCL, Huawei and Hisense also produce OLED TVs, also known as QD-LED TVs. In 2019, Vizio produced 380,000 of its P-series Quantum TVs, while TCL produced 50,000 and Huawei also 50,000. Hisense produced 30,000 units. These manufactures are also expected to produce more QLED TVs.
In the global TV markets in 2019, Samsung was No.1 in both sales and prices. In sales, it was No.1 in its 14 the consecutive year. The volume of QLED TVs accounted for about 12.1% of Samsung’s total TV sales. This was about double from 2018.
In second place in terms of price was LG Electronics, followed by Sony, Hisense and TCL. In terms of sales, in second place was LGE, followed by TCL, Hisense and Xiaomi.
Samsung was also at first place in the premium TV market with a 52.4% share, which was more than double the share of Sony. In the 75-inch and larger segment, Samsung was at No.1 with a 49.6%, followed by Sony and LGE.
