Huawei Technologies has applied flexible OLED displays to its entire lineup of flagship smartphones in an apparent bid to step up competition against Samsung.
Industry sources said on April 1 that Huawei has applied the panels to all three of its P40 series that it launched last week. This marks the first time for the Chinese tech company to go OLED for its entire P lineup.
The smallest is the P40 sporting a 6.11-inch screen supplied by China’s BOE. The P40 Pro came with a 6.58-inch screen and the P40 Pro+, a 6.58-inch screen. Both features 3D curved designs. LG Display, BOE and Samsung Display supplied the P40 Pro, while the P40 Pro+ screens were supplied exclusively by Samsung.
In the previous P30 series, Huawei had applied flexible OLED panels to only the high-end P30 Pro model. But as the Mate 30 series launched in the latter half of 2019 both used flexible OLEDs, there is a big possibility of the same applying for the Mate 40 series.
Compared to Samsung Electronics that applies OLED screens to about 60% of its smartphones, Huawei had applied the panels to only around 20% of its smartphones in 2019. The Chinese company is determined to raise the figure this year, according to market watchers.
Prospects for the overall sales of the P40, however, remain dim due to its lack of GMS that makes it incompatible with YouTube and Gmail. The P40 Pro+ is the first smartphone in the world with an optic 10x zoom. This is double the 5x of Samsung’s Galaxy S20 Ultra.
The P40 and the P40 Pro will be sold beginning on April 7, while the P40 Pro+ will be launched a month or two later.
