Samsung Display on Tuesday has filed a second patent lawsuit against JOLED in the US, claiming the latter violated its patents.
Intellectual Keystone Technology (IKT), a US subsidiary of Samsung Display, filed the suit to the US District Court for the Western District of Texas, against JOLED and Asus.
IKT was founded by Samsung Display in 2013 with US$25 million. The company provides patents related to organic light emitting diode (OLED) display and lamps, encapsulation, material as well as those for liquid crystal display (LCD).
IKT claimed in its suit in Texas that OLED panel manufactured by JOLED and supplied to Asus violated three of its patents. The patents related to electronic device and manufacturing method for wiring board and electric optical devices (Patent 7,342,177); emission device (Patent 7,439,943); and another one in emission device (Patent 8,665,190).
Earlier this month on January 8, Samsung Display had filed its first patent lawsuit against JOLED to the same court, claiming the latter violated its patent on thin-film transistor array board and related organic light-emitting device (Patent 9,768,240). The South Korean panel maker had made the same claim that JOLED’s OLED display supplied to Asus violated its patent.
The lawsuits are largely in retaliation to JOLED’s patent lawsuits filed to the same court in Texas and Mannheim Regional Court in Germany against Samsung Electronics and Samsung Display.
JOLED at the time said in its lawsuit in Texas that Samsung Display had violated six of its patents, including the one for EL(OLED) panel and how to power them and related EL device (Patent 9,728,130). The Japanese display maker claimed the Galaxy Note4, Galaxy S5, Galaxy Fold, Galaxy Z Flip and other products totaling over 40 models violated its patents.
JOLED was formed in 2015 as joint venture of public-private partnership Innovation Network Corporation of Japan, Japan Display Inc (JDI), Sony and Panasonic. JOLED was acquired by JDI in 2016. JOLED is collaborating with China’s CSOT (TCL) to make large OLED TV panels.
