New PBAT to launch in Q3
Kolon Industries and SK Global Chemical launch a new biodegradable plastic in the third quarter, the pair said on Wednesday.
The new plastic will be poly butylene adipate-co-teraphthalate (PBAT). Once these are buried underground, 90% of them will be degraded within six months, the companies said.
The plastic’s characteristics are flexible and easy to manufacture, making it applicable for various products, Kolon and SK said.
They have been developing PBAT since last year. They will make prototypes and verify them within the first half of 2021. They file for patents and commercially launch the plastic in the third quarter.
The pair is aiming to manufacture 50,000 metric tonnes of PBAT a year by 2023.
