SK On said on Friday that it has named SK Group vice chairman Chey Jae-won as an independent CEO and inside director of the company.
SK On was previously the battery unit of SK Innovation, which it split off from in October.
Chey, who is the younger brother of SK Group chairman Chey Tae-won, will jointly run SK On as CEO with fellow CEO Ji Dong-seop.
Chey will head global networking and growth strategies, while Ji will oversee overall management, SK On said.
The newly named CEO said in a statement that he will work to grow SK On quickly to accelerate SK Group’s strategy to reduce carbon emission and contribute to the global electric vehicle and the battery market.
The younger Chey previously was the chairman of the board at SK Telecom, starting in 2009.
Afterwards, he became CEO of SK E&S and was also the chair of SK Group’s global committee as well as the CEO SK Corporation.
However, in 2014, he was convicted and sentenced to prison for embezzling company funds, preventing from taking a job for five years afterward his prison term ended.
