HB Solution will be supplying quantum dot (QD) inkjet equipment to Samsung Display by the end of this month, TheElec has learned.
The equipment will be used to form the QD color conversion layer used in QD-OLED panels made by Samsung Display in its Q1 production line.
HB Solution announced that it had signed a deal worth 14.5 billion won to supply equipment with Samsung Display earlier this month, without specifying the equipment.
The equipment that it will supply to the display panel maker is the same one that Samsung Display conditionally approved of from Kateeva.
HB Solution will be adding software to the equipment that the US company already finished manufacturing last year.
The deal will be important for HB Solution as it will handle the repair and maintenance of the equipment. It may lead to more orders from Samsung Display in the future.
The core of the equipment is the algorithm that controls the head designed by Japan’s Konica Minolta.
The algorithm makes sure that the ink dropped from the head is coated evenly on the surface.
Meanwhile, Samsung Display already uses QD inkjet equipment supplied by its affiliate Semes.
The panel maker only gave conditional approval of Kateeva’s kits as Semes’ initial batches underperformed.
However, since the first half of last year, Semes’ kits have improved in performance, allowing Samsung Display to reach around 85% yield for QD-OLED panels.
